We’ll guide you through a simple process to:

Uncover the
core of your
purpose

Articulate a
laser-focused
message

Frame the message
so it aligns with your
audience’s
perspective

Express the message
through language and
visuals that are easy for
your audience to
understand and appreciate

The result is more than “wordsmithing.” It’s clarity: an elegant combination
of concepts, structures, and language that empowers your audience to
grasp what you have to say and get excited about it.

What to expect when you co-create with us

Here’s how a typical authoring project unfolds:

01

Messaging Strategy Session—Depending on the scope of your project, this could be one to three hours long.

02

Authoring Guidelines—This document captures the findings of the strategy session, summarizing:

  • Strategic goals for the communication
  • Audience profile
  • Desired tone and style
  • Research requirements (we’re happy to pitch in by conducting research for you)
  • Design constraints (e.g., word count or formatting requirements)
  • Key pieces of content to be developed

03

First draft (skeleton)—This document doesn’t include any graphic design, just design notes suggesting possible visual treatments.

04

Meeting to discuss the first draft—In some cases, it’s possible to carry out reviews and revisions via email. But for most clients, the development process works most smoothly when there’s at least one opportunity to talk through strengths and weaknesses of the first draft.

05

Second draft (complete)—The second draft typically includes graphic design, done by a Clarity Studio Associate or your in-house designer.

06

Second draft (complete)—The second draft typically includes graphic design, done by a Clarity Studio Associate or your in-house designer.

07

Review comments on second draft—Depending on the extent of your feedback, you might like to share your comments via email or a Zoom meeting (or both).

08

Third draft—This should be the final version. At this point, you should be feeling great about the clarity we’ve created together, through both the messaging and the design. If not, then you may want to consider an additional round of revisions (depending on the circumstances, this could involve additional fees).

Throughout the authoring process, we’ll stay in touch with you through email or, if you prefer, Slack. Our role is to help you express YOUR thoughts in clear, persuasive text and visuals—and the only way we can do that is if we work together in a creative partnership.

What you can expect to get from coaching

As you work with your Clarity Coach to refine a work-in-progress, you’ll develop your personal strengths as a communicator. While you and your coach will develop your own set of coaching goals, here are 10 top outcomes of the coaching process:

01

“Translate” your expert knowledge into concepts and language accessible to your target audience

02

Articulate a clear, compelling key message

03

Customize a document to a specific audience (e.g., a particular prospect or potential funder)

04

Improve your writing productivity

05

Develop a strong professional writing voice

06

Strengthen a logical argument

07

Build a better business case

08

Spot grammar glitches that show up frequently in your writing

09

Re-structure your writing for greater clarity

10

Revise and edit your own writing with accuracy and confidence

What you won’t get from coaching

Coaching enables you to improve a real email, document, or presentation. Depending on the level of effort and skill you’re able to bring to this task, you may or may not achieve a fully polished end product ready to send to a customer or funder.

Your coach will critique your work, give you constructive feedback, and offer techniques and tools you can use to improve your communication. But they won’t rewrite or edit your writing.

But that doesn’t mean we’ll leave you in the lurch! You may want to combine coaching with authoring and/or graphic design services so you can maximize the DIY approach AND deliver an end product that meets high professional standards.

Examples of communication products we could create together

Besides the individual options listed below, we offer quarterly retainer packages that enable you to combine authoring services with coaching for a set fee.
